John V. Mallon is a highly accomplished New Jersey civil trial attorney and insurance defense lawyer, certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Civil Trial Attorney since 2001. As Chair of the firm’s Defense Department, he leads a team of 15 attorneys handling matters involving automobile and premises liability, aviation, and insurance coverage disputes.
John has prepared hundreds of cases for trial in both state and federal courts and has tried more than 80 to verdict. His extensive litigation experience has earned him recognition from multiple professional organizations. He has been named to the New Jersey Super Lawyers® list in the area of Insurance Coverage every year since 2009. Martindale-Hubbell awarded him its highest AV® Preeminent peer review rating for ethical standards and legal ability—a distinction reserved for attorneys ranked at the highest level of professional excellence. John has also been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® in the area of Insurance Law. In 2016, the Hudson County Bar Association named him Civil Lawyer of the Year.
John’s appellate experience includes defending numerous appeals on behalf of his clients. In Buono v. Scalia, he successfully argued before the New Jersey Supreme Court on the doctrine of parental immunity. In a matter of first impression, he persuaded the court that a parent’s decision to allow a child to ride a bicycle during a neighborhood block party was a valid exercise of parental judgment, providing immunity from a negligent supervision claim.
An active legal educator, John serves as a continuing legal education (CLE) speaker for organizations such as the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education (NJICLE), the New Jersey Defense Association (NJDA), and the New Jersey Association for Justice (NJAJ).
John earned his bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from the University of Scranton in 1988 and his Juris Doctor from Rutgers University School of Law in 1994. He began his career with Allstate Insurance Company in 1988, gaining extensive experience across a wide range of insurance-related areas. Before joining Chasan Lamparello Mallon & Cappuzzo, PC in 1997, he served as trial counsel for Allstate’s legal department. John became a principal with the firm in January 2001.
John has been an active member of the New Jersey Defense Association since 2013, serving on its Board of Directors and as President during the 2020–2021 term. He received the NJDA Attorney of the Year Award in 2024. He is also a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association, where he chaired the Insurance Defense Committee from 2012 to 2014, and the Hudson County Bar Association, where he co-chairs the Civil Arbitration Selection Committee. John is also a proud member of DRI – The Voice of the Defense Bar.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, John is deeply involved in his community. He has served on his local zoning board and has volunteered for youth sports, including instructional soccer and Little League baseball and softball. John has been active in the Boy Scouts of America for more than two decades. As a Scout, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, and he has served as an Assistant Cubmaster, Den Leader, Assistant Scoutmaster, Merit Badge Counselor, and Eagle Coach.
